Google hat anscheinend konkrete Pläne den Onlinedistributionsdienst für Computerspiele STEAM und die dazugehörige Mutter, und Entwickler von Half-Life, Valve, zu kaufen. Zusammen mit der Marketingkraft von Google könnte ein potentielles Google STEAM in Zukunft eine wirkliche Konkurrenz für den klassischen Vertriebsweg von Computerspielen sein.

Search engine behemoth Google is set to buy Half-Life developer Valve, according to The Inquirer. The news would be the latest in Google™s ascent into the interactive entertainment space, following the announcement of virtual worlds platform Lively.

Valve owns content distribution system Steam “ the de facto PC games digital delivery service. It reached 15 million registered accounts in February.

Valve marketing boss Doug Lombardi said in an interview August that he would be ˜happy to discuss an acquisition™ with potential buyers.

An article in Forbes last month predicted that Google would soon move into traditional games publishing.

A Google spokesperson told MCV the firm “would not comment on rumour and speculation”.

Man darf also gespannt sein, auch wenn man bei Meldungen vom Inquirer immer eine gewisse Portion Vorsicht mit walten lassen sollte.

Lag ich doch richtig damit, dass man The Inquirer schlicht nie vertrauen kann, wenn es um sensationelle Meldungen geht. Valve kommentiert die Meldung jedenfalls wie folgt

It’s nothing more than rumor. Valve is focused on making Left 4 Dead a great product and supporting folks like Crytek and Ubisoft who are bringing great games to Steam this year.
